Recently, the US Agency for International Development (USAID) has announced a three-year Worker Empowerment Programme in Bangladesh to support labour rights, organizing the union and women empowerment in the apparel manufacturing sector. This announcement was made during the second anniversary of the Rana Plaza garment factory collapse in Dhaka that killed over 1,100 workers. The programme aims to strengthen the capacity of independent worker organizations, particularly women workers with skills and support necessary to protect their rights and improve conditions in the workplace and community.
