The nationwide strike on September 2 by various Central Trade Unions (CTUs) has not impacted garment factories much, though some incidents of tension in Mayapuri Industrial Area in Delhi and few events of brawl were heard. At these places, labour was extracted forcefully from factories by some union members and the full-day production was badly impacted. There are few big garment export units in this area including Richa Group.
In Noida, few factories declared holiday to avoid any kind of inconvenience and in lieu of this holiday the worker will have to work on Sunday while most of the factories continued their work in closed doors. As safety arrangements were reasonably good no such mishap was reported. On an average, 10 to 15 per cent labour was absent. Factories in Gurgaon and Faridabad also didn’t register much impact of strike and worked smoothly. In some of the factories, a few workers called it off from their work to support the strike. The scenario in other states and apparel hubs too saw no major impact. The strike was called out for demanding raise in minimum wages to Rs. 15,000.
