
Faruque Hassan, who heads Bangladesh’s apex garment makers’ body of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) as its President has recently called upon Kontoor Brands, a prominent clothing company, to expand its garment sourcing from Bangladesh, particularly focusing on high-value and non-cotton items.
Highlighting the considerable advancements in workplace safety, environmental sustainability, and the well-being of workers in the garment industry, he emphasised that these achievements have solidified Bangladesh’s position as a preferred destination for garment sourcing.
This appeal was made during a meeting with senior executives from Kontoor Brands, a globally recognized apparel company with longstanding business relationships with Bangladeshi suppliers.
Kontoor Brands owns two renowned denim labels, Lee and Wrangler.
The meeting, held recently in Dhaka, featured key representatives from Kontoor Brands, including Ezio Garciamendez, Vice President and Chief Supply Chain Officer; Wesley Gibson, Vice President and Managing Director of Sourcing; Heena Agrawal, Vice President of Finance; and Gihan Palihena, Director of Asia Product Supply – South Asia even as the discussions centered on matters of mutual interest, with a particular focus on strengthening the partnership between Kontoor Brands and the Bangladeshi garment industry.
During the meeting, Faruque Hassan provided an overview of the various initiatives undertaken by Bangladesh’s garment industry to enhance its manufacturing capabilities, especially in the production of high-end products such as manmade fibre and technical textile-based garments.
The BGMEA President emphasised the industry’s continuous efforts to promote sustainable fashion practices and advocate for the adoption of a circular economy model.
