With the biennial election of the apex garment makers’ body of Bangladesh – the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) – expected to be held in April next year, industry leaders have reportedly maintained that whoever is elected the president, would have to face a lot of challenges.
As per media reports, even as Sammilita Parishad, a platform comprising a section of the trade body, has already announced its candidate for the president, the other panel, Forum, which was yet to make the name of their presidential candidate public, is expected to meet soon to decide on the same.
The report cited Anwar Ul Alam Chowdhury Parvez, a former president in this regard, according to whom the panel leaders and supporters would meet soon to nominate a candidate.
But whoever is elected the president would have to face a lot of challenges subsequent to the massive hit the sector has taken on account of the coronavirus pandemic, the industry leaders felt.
The next BGMEA President would have to work towards employment generation, negotiate fresh orders with the buyers, try bring back normalcy to the sector while also ensure to get reinstated the cancelled work orders, reportedly gave some examples of the challenges the industry leaders for the next president of the trade body.
