In a major effort to hone the skill-set of the workforce of the fast-developing Cambodian apparel industry which employs more than 65,000 people of the country, The Garment Manufacturers Association in Cambodia (GMAC) in collaboration with French Development Agency and the Ministry of Labour, has commenced construction of US $ 3.81 million training institute in the Phnom Penh Special Economic Zone.
Expected to be completed by 2016, the training institute plans to train 1,600 garment workers in the first three years and 240 university students each year as part of a separate programme. With financial assistance from the French Development Agency, the institute will train local workers to fill middle management positions in garment factories, stated a GMAC statement underlining that the training institute will be recognized as a private accredited training institute by the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training.
