Following the disbursement of Taka 7,500 crore earlier by the Government to help pay wages to the workers for 3 months, the garment manufacturers of Bangladesh could soon get financial assistance from the Government to pay wages to the apparel workers for 3 more months, claimed media reports.
An assurance to discuss on the same with the Governor of the country’s central bank (Bangladesh Bank) was given by Salman F. Rahman, who is private industry and investment affairs adviser to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, on Thursday, underlined the reports.
The proposed discussion between the Prime Minister’s private industry and investment affairs adviser and the Governor of Bangladesh Bank would be aimed at having further allocation for the apparel sector to pay wages to workers from stimulus package of Taka 30,000 crore, announced to enhance the working capital of the industry.
Salman F. Rahman reportedly said this in a virtual meeting while adding that as to his knowledge Taka 8,000 crore from the package of Taka 30,000 crore has been disbursed and a portion of the fund from the package could as well be diverted for lending to the export sector to pay workers’ wage.
It may be mentioned here that earlier in March, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced Taka 5,000-crore coronavirus bailout package to help pay the workers’ wages (for April, May and June), but eventually the total amount disbursed in this direction stood at Taka 7,500 crore.
