Even as the United Kingdom announced a Tier-4 restriction for London and the southeastern and eastern parts of England – under the fresh restrictions non-essential shops, hairdressers and leisure and entertainment venues must remain closed with a new ‘stay at home’ order – subsequent to the surge in coronavirus cases amidst alarm that a new strain of the novel coronavirus is spreading rapidly in the region, there are rising concerns amongst garment exporters in Bangladesh of a likely economic catastrophe on account of the same and stringent measure put in place to arrest the spread of the pandemic, which they feel will hit their businesses, claimed media report.
Quoting a Director of the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), the news report underlined that one European Union-based buyer had recently asked one of its Bangladeshi suppliers to delay the production of its order for 4 lakh pieces of garments due to the spread of the new strain of coronavirus even as the supplier in question had already procured raw materials for the same.
Meanwhile, speaking to the media, Snowtex Group Managing Director SM Khaled has, reportedly, expressed apprehensions that subsequent to the discovery of the new COVID-19 strain in the UK which has led some countries to already suspended air connectivity with England, garment exporters in Bangladesh could have to endure economic consequences of the same.
There is no doubt it will affect us; we have to wait at least 10-15 days to observe the real impact of the new situation, reportedly, said SM Khaled while adding that when France was about to ease a month-long strict shutdown, UK’s move has brought again uncertainty for the apparel exporters.
