Bangladesh’s export earnings in April 2021 increased by 502.75 per cent to US $ 3.13 billion from what was US $ 520.01 million in the same month of the previous year even as the export earnings in the July-April period of the current financial year 2020-21 grew by 8.74 per cent to US $ 32.07 billion from what was US $ 29.49 billion in the same period of the previous fiscal year.
Reports maintained this citing data from the country’s Export Promotion Bureau, adding that the earning from the garment sector in April last year was only US $ 0.37 billion and despite export growth this April, the earnings were 6.44 per cent below the monthly target of US $ 3.35 billion even as between July and April (the first 10 months of the current fiscal year), receipts from apparel shipment were up 6.24 per cent year-on-year (Y-o-Y) to US $ 26 billion.
Further, of the sum, shipment of knitwear items which registered 15.34 per cent Y-o-Y growth earned US $ 13.99 billion even if the earnings from the woven items declined 2.71 per cent to US $ 12 billion.
It may be mentioned here that thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, demand for woven items such as formal shirts and trousers has fallen even if shipment of knitwear items is increasing as people are spending more time indoors.
We have not returned to normalcy yet and the rebound of garments items has just begun, stated President of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) Faruque Hassan while speaking to the media, adding that he hopes export of garments to the European markets will get a boost by September even if export to the US market was performing strongly.
