A delegation from the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, led by President SM Mannan (Kochi), met Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud at the ministry in Dhaka on Tuesday and sought the Foreign Ministry’s assistance in diversifying the RMG sector’s products and markets.
The BGMEA delegation comprised the following individuals: Md Imranur Rahman, Mohammad Sohel Sadat, Shams Mahmud, Rajiv Chowdhury, Md Mohiuddin Rubel, Shehrin Salam Oishee, Md Nurul Islam, and Saifuddin Siddiquie Sagar. The vice presidents were Arshad Jamal (Dipu), Abdullah Hil Rakib, and Miran Ali.
They talked about ways to increase ready-made clothing exports to new markets and diversify their product offerings.
During the meeting, the BGMEA president emphasised the significance of market and product diversification to reach the goal of achieving US $ 100 billion from garment exports by 2030.
He pointed out that over the last 15 years, with government policy backing, garment exports to new markets have expanded from US $ 847 million to US $ 8,370 million.
To expand exports to new markets, particularly to Brazil, Argentina, Russia, South Africa, Turkey, and ASEAN nations, the BGMEA requests the assistance of Bangladesh’s pertinent embassies in organising roadshows, establishing connections with buyers, and taking part in important fairs.
In addition, he emphasised the significance of regional and bilateral free trade agreements with these prospective markets.
The president of the BGMEA asked for the Foreign Ministry’s assistance during the meeting to discuss the possible effects of LDC graduation on the nation’s export trade and the continuation of duty-free facilities in important export markets.
The Foreign Minister stressed the importance of expanding into new product categories and markets, particularly in ASEAN nations, South America, and Africa.
He told the team that the Foreign Ministry will assist them fully in this matter and mentioned that talks to abolish tariffs in these potential markets were still ongoing with several nations.
