The comments “Yes, Bulletproof Tuxedo, Made in France. I’d be dead if it were Bangladesh” in the movie “The Last Mercenary” released by Netflix came in for strong criticism by the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), which had called for removal of the “derogatory remarks” on the readymade garment sector of Bangladesh.
Media reports maintained this while adding BGMEA President Faruque Hassan has written to Earl R. Miller, US Ambassador to Bangladesh, drawing attention to the movie even as he requested Earl R. Miller to initiate steps to stop streaming of the movie until the dialogue or the scene is removed.
The letter from the BGMEA chair while underlining that Bangladesh apparel industry has made significant progress and has been ranked second in ‘Ethical Manufacturing’, in a survey recently conducted by Hong Kong-based supply chain compliance solutions provider QIMA, maintained as Netflix is a US company and runs from the USA; BGMEA, on behalf of all apparel manufacturers and workers of Bangladesh, requests Earl R. Miller to convey their vehement protest to Netflix for releasing the movie without censoring the derogatory remarks about ‘Made in Bangladesh’.
