Amid rising concern amongst the garment workers over action initiated by apparel manufacturers against those involved in the recent agitation, the President of the apex garment manufacturers’ body of Bangladesh has assured that no action will be taken against the innocent.
“No innocent garment worker would be suspended, but those who got involved in criminal activities during the weeklong labour unrest would be punished. “In our tripartite core committee meeting we agreed that no innocent worker will lose job.” – Md Siddiqur Rahman, President, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA)
The BGMEA President’s assurance reportedly came in following claims by labour leaders in Ashulia and Savar that as many as 1,411 workers have been laid off from 16 factories the protests began over alleged disparity in wages.
“A worker may face dismissal if he is found directly involved in vandalising factories, looting or arson attack,” maintained the BGMEA chief further while underlining that a fired worker must be given service benefits under the labour law.
