Underlining that despite port and customs facilities in closer proximity, the apparel manufacturing units were facing a crisis in the region due to infrastructural problems, leaders of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) have sought more cooperation from the Customs Bond Commissionerate in Chittagong so as to boost the growth of the apparel sector in the Chittagong region.
As per reports, the trade body leaders maintained that in this context if the Customs Bond Commissionerate dealing with the apparel sector does not ease and expedite their services, many garment makers will have to shut down their factories for good.
The Senior Vice-President of the garment makers’ body, Syed Nazrul Islam, made these observations when the newly elected board members of the BGMEA paid a courtesy visit to the Commissioner of Customs Bond Commissionerate, Chittagong, AKM Mahbubur Rahman, on 28 April (Wednesday) even as they maintained that many development projects, including special economic zones, were coming up in the Chittagong region, luring investments here and if the Customs Bond Commissionerate eases and speeds up their services, it would only help industries grow further while the Commissioner on his part, reportedly, assured the visiting garment makers’ delegation of easing their services to further boost the growth of the apparel industry in the region.
