Bangladesh’s apex garment makers’ body, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), will hold its next election as per the regular schedule.
This was underlined by media reports, which claimed a decision to this end was taken following BGMEA’s former presidents’ forum meeting held on 27 December (Sunday) at capital’s Hotel Platinum Grand.
Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi presided over the meeting as the president of BGMEA’s former presidents’ forum.
Amongst other former presidents of the trade body who attended were Anisur Rahman Sinha, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), Mayor Md. Atiqul Islam, Siddiqur Rahman, Mostafa Golam Quddus, Quazi Moniruzzaman, Md. Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin, Anwar-Ul-Alam Chowdhury (Parvez), SM Fazlul Hoque, Abdus Salam Murshedy and Kutubuddin Ahmed.
The former presidents’ forum has decided that BGMEA will hold its next election as per regular procedure without any extension or consensus with any panel, reportedly, maintained Abdus Salam Murshedy after the meeting, which was convened following 20 December’s emergency board meeting of BGMEA, which sought its opinion with regard to the decision to extend the tenure of the current committee for 3 to 6 months to finish some incomplete tasks.
It may be mentioned here that apparel makers traditionally compete to get a position in the BGMEA’s 35-member governing body under the banners of Forum and Sammilita Parishad.
