The first unit of the 1320 megawatt coal-fired power Rampal Power Station, being constructed at Rampal Upazila — upazila is a ‘sub-district’ or an administrative region in Bangladesh, functioning as a sub-unit of a district — is in all likelihood will start commercial operation this month.
This is as per media reports, which citing the concerned project officials, further added, the second unit is likely to go into commercial operation by June, 2023.
This comes as a very positive development amidst reports of industries in the country struggling to deal with power crisis even if each unit of power plant will reportedly generate 660 MW of electricity.
Meanwhile, speaking to the media, Deputy General Manager and spokesperson of Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company (Pvt.) Limited (BIFPCL) — BIFPCL is 50:50 joint venture between India’s state owned National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and Bangladesh’s Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) where they agreed to implement the project on a 50:50 equity basis — reportedly added along with the first unit, the work of the second unit is also progressing in full swing even as officials concerned reportedly stated unit 1 of the coal-fired power plant was successfully synchronised with the national grid on 15 August and on the same day around 91 MW of electricity was generated and supplied to the national grid.
