Bangladesh continues to maintain its lead position in the global denim market even as denim product manufacturers in Bangladesh have surpassed their Chinese counterparts in the export strongholds of Europe and the USA.
This was underlined by media reports, which cited export figures from the relevant authorities.
Reports claimed that as per data from the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) and the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Bangladesh exported denim products worth US $ 689.69 million to European Union in the January–June period of 2022, registering a 37.26 per cent year-on-year growth even if Bangladesh was the top denim exporter in the USA, fetching US $ 445.51 million in the first half, marking an increase of 57.06 per cent from that of US $ 283.65 million during the first half of last year.
“Consumers are buying denim items considering their durability,” reportedly, maintained Shams Mahmud, Managing Director of Shasha Denims, one of the top denim manufacturers in Bangladesh, claiming demand for denim has a correlation with economic downturns even as he added trade tension between Washington and Beijing also played a major role in shifting work orders from China to Bangladesh.
