Bangladesh, which depends on natural gas to produce power, has recently decided to purchase a third cargo of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) this year from the spot market.
Media reports claimed this adding each MMBtu would cost around US $ 16.1 — as per concerned officials a cargo of LNG is equivalent to 33.66 lakh MMBtu — even as Vitol Asia Pte Ltd of Singapore, which has won a competitive bidding process organised by the state-owned Petrobangla among its 20 suppliers, will supply the LNG.
The concerned official further reportedly underlined the decision to import the third LNG cargo was taken at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on government purchase presided over by the Law Minister Anisul Huq virtually, as the Finance Minister, AHM Mustafa Kamal is now abroad.
It may be mentioned here there were frequent power outages in the past summer across Bangladesh which had impacted business as well as day-to-day life very adversely. The news comes amidst reports the Government is likely to import more LNG cargoes in the current year to meet the requirements.
