
Bangladesh, which at present has limited trade agreements with other developing countries but no Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) is discussing FTAs with at least 11 countries now.
This was reportedly underlined by Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina recently, who reportedly came up with this information while interacting with Nikkei Asia at her official residence in Dhaka ahead of a visit to Japan, scheduled to start soon.
With the preferential tariff exemptions expiring in three years, Bangladesh is reportedly seeking new means to promote exports and the FTA discussion is a step towards the same.
Interacting with Nikkei Asia, the Bangladesh Prime Minister reportedly maintained the country will be facing a very different situation once the transition from the Least Developed Country (LDC) is completed s the transition out of ‘Least Developed Country’ status while underlining hence the initiative has been taken to pursue a range of trade deals.
