The Chinese Economic and Industrial Zone (CEIZ) in Anwara sub-district of Bangladesh’s Chittagong district will be established through a contract awarded to China’s state-controlled China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC).
This is as per reports, which added, located 242 kilometers southeast of the capital city, Dhaka, CRBC will not only develop the zone but also provide essential utility services there.
This economic zone’s primary objective is to create a favourable environment to attract Chinese investors, stimulate job creation, and promote sustainable economic development.
The Committee on Economic Affairs in Bangladesh recently granted preliminary approval to a proposal put forth by the Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority (BEZA) to award the contract to CRBC using the direct procurement method.
Spanning 778 acres, this economic and industrial zone is anticipated to generate 30,000 employment opportunities, according to BEZA’s Executive Chairman, Shaikh Yusuf Harun even as various facilities, including chemical, automobile assembly, garments, and pharmaceutical factories, will be established within the zone.
Notably, during her visit to China in June 2014, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina extended an invitation to Chinese investors to establish an exclusive economic zone in Bangladesh. This endeavour represents the realisation of that offer.
