Underlining that the large-scale order cancellation by the global buyers would weigh heavy on the readymade garment industry of Bangladesh and the situation could worsen post pandemic for the industry, speakers at a recent seminar called upon the trade bodies to support each other and work with the Government to save the industry.
Participating at session seven of the virtual talk show series, RMG industry pre-COVID and post-COVID, organised by the Bangladesh-Malaysia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BMCCI), speakers called upon the apparel trade bodies – the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), to join hands with the Government and support one another to salvage the industry’s future in such trying times.
We are getting back some of the old orders but no new orders are coming, maintained former BMCCI President Syed Moazzam Hossain, adding that even though peak business time will be in November and December but till then RMG units would have to keep running otherwise it would be a complete deadlock.
Syed underlined, in such a scenario, the Government’s policy needs to be very proactive to help enable garment makers start negotiating with the buyers once again.
