According to a senior official of BGMEA (Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association) more than 300 new apparel units were set up in the last two years while 450 factories were closed facing a flurry of odds including recent wage hikes, safety and compliance drives. Of the total new units, new entrepreneurs established 137 factories while the rest emerged as expansions of existing companies. The new factories were set up maintaining safety and compliance requirements, generating employment for 180,000 workers rendered jobless due to the factory closures, following the aftermath of Tazreen fire and Rana Plaza building collapse.
