According to BGMEA, two more Bangladeshi readymade garment (RMG) factory units have received the United States Green Building Council’s (USGBC) LEED certification (certificate for green factories).
The USGBC awarded Windy Apparels Limited, a factory unit situated in Gazipur, a gold certificate in March for scoring 69 out of 110 in the LEED BD+C: New Construction v4 rating system.
Comfit Banana Leaf, a different manufacturer located in Tangail, also received a gold certificate at LEED BD+C: New Construction v4 rating system, scoring 73.
Bangladesh now has 213 LEED-certified factories, including 80 platinum-rated, 119 gold-rated, 10 silver-rated, and four certified facilities, further solidifying its position as a global leader in the production of clothing that is environmentally friendly.
At present, 54 of the world’s top 100 LEED Green Factories are situated in Bangladesh, along with nine of the top 10 and 18 of the top 20, indicating a remarkable achievement that is poised to attract additional investment and partnerships, cementing Bangladesh’s reputation as a sustainable manufacturing hub.
Additionally, Bangladesh is the home of the green industries with the highest and second-highest scores. An additional 550 factories are in the process of obtaining the LEED accreditation from the USGBC.
USGBC honors factories based on several criteria — transformation performance, energy, water, and waste management. The best performers are rated with platinum, followed by gold and silver.
Industry insiders claim that although these requirements may initially increase the setup costs, over time they greatly save operating expenses for green factories. Employees can work in a secure environment in these factories.
