Bangladesh leather industry, which is the second largest export sector of Bangladesh after readymade garments, continues to suffer due to lack of Leather Working Group (LWG) certification.
As per reports, due to the lack of LWG certification, major American and European brands and retailers are not sourcing leather products from Bangladesh and those foreign buyers who are still buying leather products from the country, are doing so at rock bottom prices.
Meanwhile, speaking to the media, Bangladesh Tanners Association (BTA) Chairman Md Shaheen Ahamed, reportedly, maintained even though prices of leather products in the global market are high, Bangladesh entrepreneurs associated with the sector have little option but sell products at lower prices as big brands are not taking products from them due to lack of LWG certification.
Due to this, leather and leather products’ exports from Bangladesh have become China-centric as buyers from Europe, USA and Japan, who earlier sourced from Bangladesh, have stopped doing so.
