At least six garment workers were injured during a protest on 11th March at Ashulia’s Sterling Styles Ltd. factory, and they were later admitted to the Ashulia Women and Children Hospital for treatment, The workers were demanding overtime pay and other benefits, General Manager (Administration) Abdul Mannan Mia of the factory told the media.
The protest began over several issues, including raising the amount of tiffin, providing yearly leave, and paying extra for overtime. The protesting workers informed the media that they were having trouble with the factory authorities for a couple of days,
Commenting on the issue, the general manager said this factory, with about 4,500 workers, operates in the same way other factories in the vicinity are managed as per the labour law.
The general manager, Abdul Mannan Mia addressed the matter and stated that this firm, which employs roughly 4,500 people, runs following labor laws much like other factories in the area.
“For the last three days, the workers have been making irrational demands, such as receiving an 11-day yearly leave payment and having every public holiday off. According to Abdul Mannan Mia, “We also extend their leaves on Eid holidays and adjust their extra leave days by attending work on some Fridays before Ramadan.”
“But the workers are now demanding money even for these days. The workers stopped participating in work for the last few days because of all this,” he added.
“At one point, they beat up at least six of our mid-level workers and walked out of the factory,” he further said.
Ashulia Industrial Police-1 Additional Superintendent Mahmud Naser said, “At one point when workers came out from the factory and tried to create chaos, the industrial policemen fired a round of tear shells and chased them to disperse them.”
“The situation is under control as we have been communicating with the owners to resolve the issue,” he added.
