The global rights body IndustriALL recently called upon the Bangladesh Government to make sincere efforts to implement the roadmap requested by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) towards improving workers’ rights in Bangladesh.
Media reports maintained this adding IndustriALL made this request ahead of the ILO governing body’s meeting scheduled later in March while adding in 2019, several worker organisations in Bangladesh submitted a complaint under Article 26 of the ILO Constitution even if the complaint concerned non-observance of a number of ILO conventions, including on freedom of association and the right to bargain collectively, consequent to which, the ILO governing body requested Bangladesh to develop a roadmap of actions in response to the non-observance of the conventions.
Accordingly, the Bangladesh Government, reportedly, submitted a progress report, providing updates on four priority areas of the roadmap, including trade union registration, labour law reform, labour inspection and enforcement, and addressing acts of anti-union discrimination/unfair labour practices and violence against workers.
Meanwhile, in a statement issued in this direction, it has, reportedly, been underlined the commitments made in the time-bound roadmap were yet to be fulfilled.
