
Following recent hearing on a writ petition filed by the Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh in May 2010 which sought necessary directives to protect the Buriganga River, the High Court has ordered the Department of Environment (DoE) to file cases against 30 Keraniganj-based washing units in capital Dhaka, for polluting the Buriganga River.
The all-important order was issued by the bench of Justice Mohammad Ullah and Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore on 3 January (Sunday).
In addition, the High Court has also directed the authorities concerned and the local representatives to take legal action against individuals or organisations that pollute the water of Buriganga River, while also report to the High Court on the first Sunday of every month, on the progress in complying with its orders.
The establishments against which cases are to be filed by the DoE are namely Lily Water plants, Bismillah, Lotus, Ahmed Hossain, Achhia, Amena, Sun Moon, Eden, Global, Rubel, Par Joar, GM, Cumilla, Anushka, Sotota, Chanchal, Abdur Rob, Joena, Kalam, Water Colour, Dhaka, Ajan, New Sahara, Dohar, Mow, Setu, Quality, Relative, New Nasha and Unique.
The petitioner’s counsel, Manzill Murshid, reportedly, underlined that DoE has closed the plants twice, but they resumed their operations.
