
Experts have stressed due diligence should be mandated rather than remain voluntary in Bangladesh apparel sector even as they said companies should be required to comply with issues such as workplace safety, forced labour, and environmental protection.
As per reports, they made the observations while speaking at a plenary session titled ‘Mandatory Human Rights Due Diligence’ organised as part of the fourth edition of the Sustainable Apparel Forum in the capital Dhaka recently even as they called upon the non-governmental organizations (NGOs), the government, civil society, the media and the private sector to work together on this issue.
“Strong protection is also necessary to communicate more broadly to the global community that Bangladesh can be a real leader when it comes to strong labour right,” reportedly opined US Embassy in Bangladesh Labor Attaché Leena Khan even as she recommended the Government to enable environment for labour protections, including labour law reforms and importantly implementation and ensuring trade unions are able to register without fear of any kind of retaliation.
