A substantial number of textile dyeing units are reportedly increasing water pollution level in Vietnam. One such company is Mei Sheng Textiles Co. Ltd., a Chinese invested company, which has allegedly been booked seven times for illegally discharging wastewater. The company built a dyeing plant with an annual capacity of 1,100 tonnes per year. This plant discharges untreated wastewater into Da Den Lake, which supplies water to 90 per cent of people in Ba Ria-Vung Tau region.
To combat with issues like these, Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (VITAS) has proposed that the Government should set up textile industrial zones of 500-1,000 hectares to create favourable conditions in wastewater treatment in the country and call for investment in the production of fabric, fibre and dyeing.

In tune with the association, Dr. Nguyen Duc Thanh, Director of the Institute for Economic and Policy Research of the Economics University, Vietnam National University, reportedly said, “Stringent actions should be taken against enterprises to ensure effective protection of the environment. If not paid attention, damage to society and the people will be enormous and may wash away our efforts to make economic growth and social stability.”
