Amidst reports that many people were leaving capital Dhaka for their respective hometowns and villages ahead of the holy festival of Eid-ul-Fitr, State Minister for Labour and Employment, Begum Monnujan Sufian, has underlined that all workers including those employed in the readymade garment sector will not be allowed to leave their respective workplaces during the upcoming Eid holidays.
She made this important announcement during a tripartite meeting held in the capital recently during which Begum Monnujan Sufian maintained that no worker can leave their workplace during Eid holidays and the decision of restricting workers from going to their ancestral villages (during the Eid holidays), she said, has been taken to reduce the chances of them getting infected by the dreaded COVID-19.
The Labour Ministry convened the meeting on 9 May (Sunday), attended by representatives of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association, Labour Secretary KM Abdus Salam, leaders of labour unions and State Minister for Labour Begum Monnujan Sufian, in which Begum Monnujan Sufian also, reportedly, said that all offices will remain shut for three days on account of the Eid but if apparel workers want to take leaves, owners and workers of respective factories will individually decide on the same at the factory level.
