The Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) has convened the inaugural meeting of a newly established committee tasked with reviewing the existing wastage percentages used in knit garment production. The initiative aims to strengthen accuracy and transparency in costing and pricing across the country’s textile sector.
The meeting was held at BTMA’s Gulshan office and chaired by Md Nurul Islam, Chairman of Noman Group and member of the BTMA Advisory Board, who is serving as convener of the committee. The session was co-chaired by Shafiqul Islam Sarker, Managing Director of Purabi Group and Director of BTMA. Committee members present included BTMA Directors Md Khorzed Alam, Hossain Mahmud and A Rahim Chowdhury.
Special guests in attendance were Amanat Shah Group Chairman Helal Mia, BTMA Director B M Shoaib and former BTMA Director Ruhul Amin. BTMA Secretary General Brig Gen (Retd) Md Zakir Hossain, along with senior officials of the association, also participated in the discussions.
According to BTMA sources, the committee examined current industry practices on knit garment wastage and addressed a series of technical and policy considerations. The group reached key decisions involving deeper data analysis, further engagement with mills, and the development of recommendations aimed at revising the standard wastage benchmarks used by both industry stakeholders and regulatory bodies.
Sources within the association noted that the initiative is intended to align wastage calculations with real-world production conditions and to enhance cost rationalisation throughout the knit textile value chain.
