Amidst rising fears that the garment workers employed in Bangladesh’s readymade garment sector could fall victims to the Coronavirus contagion that has spread its deadly tentacles around the globe, apex garment maker’s body of the country has now come up with new measures to protect the workers — who constitute the backbone of Bangladesh apparel sector — from COVID-19.
The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has opened a ‘Corona-control Room’ in its Uttara office, 11 health centres in different factories and a hotline at the association’s head office.
To spread awareness on COVID-19 among apparel workers, BGMEA has asked factories to form safety committees, participation committees and professional health and security committees in respective units.
It further asked the factories to undergo regular disinfection and arrange adequate hand sanitisers, soaps and other disinfection equipment for the garment workers.
