Close on heels of a report published by the US Senate committee, which underlined that readymade garment factories in Bangladesh are now structurally safe but the workers inside are still unsafe, the apex manufacturers’ body of the country, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has strongly protested the same.
As per media reports, the report titled ‘Seven Years after Rana Plaza, Significant Challenges Remain’ reportedly presented by US Senator Robert Menendez (who sits on the committee on foreign relations in the Senate) on 5 March raised question mark on labour rights in Bangladesh’s flourishing apparel manufacturing industry.
Reportedly, Dr. Rubana Huq, President, BGMEA, said in a letter to Menendez “I believe that we need to address all your concerns with as much accuracy and transparency and with our best intent to try and change the general narrative on labour practices in Bangladesh.”
Dr Rubana further said “It is common to begin any conversation and report with a tragedy. It’s also true that repetitive reference to a national tragedy often belittles all the progresses that have achieved and lessons that were learnt often undervalued.”
