The spate of recent boiler explosions in the industrial units including the readymade garment factories and packaging units seems to have moved Bangladesh Government, which is reportedly planning to impose prison terms for illegal use of boilers.
Recently, a committee under the Industries Ministry has finalised a draft of the Boiler Act, 2019 that includes recommendations received from stakeholders and submitted it to the concerned ministry for necessary action.
No one would be allowed to import boiler or boiler components without prior approval from the chief boiler inspector, the new draft underlined.
As per the draft act, if any boiler owner uses unregistered boiler or tampers with its registration number, he/she would be punishable with 2 years of imprisonment or with fine up to Taka 2 lakh or both.
The draft also proposed increasing penalty to Taka 50,000 if any boiler owner fails or refuses to produce registration or provisional order when duly called upon to do so under the act.
