The activities of the RMG Sustainability Council or RSC — RSC is a private body, which was launched by the global brands, apparel manufacturers and unions to sustain workplace safety in the apparel industry and is engaged in overseeing the safety standards — will be supervised by the Government Coordination Council or GCC, which has been formed by the Commerce Ministry, even as it will ensure RSC’s activities do not conflict with other Government regulatory bodies, while also resolve any grievances, coordinate the RSC’s work and provide necessary guidance.
Media reports maintained this while adding that even as the RSC continues to be in operation, the Bangladesh Accord has recently announced to extend the tenure in the country, which allegedly created new concerns amongst the garment factory owners in Bangladesh.
It may be mentioned here that following the 2013 Rana Plaza building collapse, European and American buyers formed the Bangladesh Accord and the Alliance for Bangladesh Workers’ Safety, which have been operating in the country since 2013 to oversee the safety measures of the garment factories even as in 2020, both the entities handed over their responsibilities to the Nirapon and the RSC, respectively.
