
Five years after the last review in 2018, Bangladesh Government has recently undertaken an initiative to review the minimum monthly wages of workers and employees in the Bangladesh readymade garment industry.
In a circular issued in this direction, the Labour Ministry announced the same while adding Bangladesh National Garment Workers Employees League president Sirajul Islam Rony has been appointed as the workers’ representative in the wage board while ex-Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) President Md Siddiqur Rahman has been appointed as the owners’ representative.
As per reports, Siddiqur and Sirajul will work with a four-member permanent board headed by Senior District Judge Liaquet Ali Molla even as the other permanent members of the board are namely workers’ representative Jatiya Shramik League leader Sultan Ahmed, Bangladesh Employers’ Federation representative Moksud Belal Siddiqui and independent member Dhaka University professor Md Kamal Uddin.
It may be mentioned here in the last review in 2018, the minimum wage was set at Taka 8,000 for garment workers.
