A recent survey carried out on the Bangladesh garment workers have found the extra earnings made by the workers through working overtime are eaten up by inflation thereby reducing their real income.
According to media reports, the joint survey conducted by SANEM or South Asian Network on Economic Modelling and the Microfinance Opportunities (MFO) on around 1,300 workers in five garment manufacturing clusters in Bangladesh over a period of two years between March 2020 and March 2022 has found it was not sustainable for workers to increase working overtime and a social security programme targeting increased productivity should be implemented to protect the workers’ income.
The survey was, reportedly, conducted as a part of the Garment Worker Diaries Project, which is a multi-year project led by the MFO.
