With an objective to revive the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) facility, the Government has not only shut down some 364 apparel units for lack of sufficient safety measures but has also ensured to fulfil all 16 conditions of the Action Plan as prescribed by the US to improve workers’ rights and safety at garment factories. This was informed to the visiting American delegation by Commerce Secretary Hedayetullah Al Mamoon leading a Bangladesh delegation, during a meeting with the US counterparts led by Assistant US Trade Representative (USTR) for South Asia Michael J. Delaney, recently. The USTR is involved in the process of reinstatement of GSP facility for Bangladesh, annulled in June 2013 by the US authority for concerns over labour rights and workplace safety.
