It’s 2 o’clock in the night, but several people are awake and chatting on WhatsApp. But their conversation doesn’t have the tone of light-hearted banter or chit-chat. Because they are industrial engineers in Delhi-NCR interacting on a group chat, titled ‘Industrial Engineer Group-NCR’ on various issues concerning the industry, some are discussing hanger systems, while a few production professionals are looking for jobs, a few others are looking for job-workers…
Nowadays, most garment factory and department professionals are on some WhatsApp group or the other, using it officially. They find it comfortable to use; it offers an easy, smooth, seamless and transparent platform for conversation among professionals and colleagues, which is far more interactive compared to emails. There are many such groups across the industry, but few are serious about any specific goal. Most of these groups are just for fun or simply don’t have a firm objective.
Meanwhile, there are some very serious groups like the ‘Industrial Engineer Group-NCR’, which acts as a trouble-shooter for many issues faced by technical professionals.
“We have professionals from more than 50 factories in this group. They include GMs, production managers, consultants technicians few fresh industry entrants but mostly we have IE, working at senior levels. In the past few months, more than 100 professionals have succeeded in getting a job through this group, since all senior level professionals keep sharing their requirements on this. While not an official one, this group is very serious. So, professionals here are quite open and feel comfortable to share information and ask for them,” said the group’s admin Babul Singh, who is an also an industrial engineer, while speaking to Apparel Resources.
He also said that adding new people to this group is difficult, since there is a membership limit on WhatsApp groups and everyday new people want to join. Be it any difficult operation or a new style, most members of this group respect the privacy of each other and enjoy the advantage of networking and sharing knowledge, information and experience.
“Though it requires a lot of time and energy to manage such a group, it is satisfying to see professionals getting together to find solution to different issues,” Babul added.
