Glittery embroidery, sequins, beads and metallic finishes were raging during the S/S and Fall 2015 collections, but was this trend able to carry forward itself to Resort 2016 collections… Yes! Seen in a plethora of versions on the runways, shiny sequins are continuing to be eternally alluring and pushing the designers and garment manufacturers to experiment with different techniques to keep alive and add freshness to the continuing love for sequins. Since the shiny surface has started to grow popular amongst different buyers, many exporters are trying different methods to give a unique touch of sequin to their collections. With overexploitation of sequins in the past years, it is mandatory for the exporters and designers to innovate in their approach and applications to keep this classic value addition away from monotony…
After witnessing years of similar applications, sequin has become a commodity and a surface ornamentation awaiting a breakthrough innovation to happen in their application or look creation. Overused at times, sequins have always portrayed a jazzy yet elegant aesthetic. Exporters and designers have also reached a state where any normal application of sequin on a garment or accessory gives them a feeling of familiarity and commonness. Since the time fringes and tassels took over, sequins in the mass segment are only seen as a small diskshaped bead which is used for overall decorative purposes. But now it’s time to change the perspective and dig out all the possible variations that a sequin can have to revamp its stature in the industry.
Sequins are sometimes also referred to as spangles, paillettes, or diamantes. Paillettes themselves are commonly very large and flat. Sequins may be stitched flat to the fabric, so that they do not move, and are less likely to fall off; or they may be stitched at only one point, so that they dangle and move easily, to catch more light. Some sequins are made with multiple facets, to increase their reflective ability.
The trend is not only visible in the accessory segment, but was also evidenced in 2016 Resort collections. Badgley Mischka’s looks stood out owing to a stunning aqua blue column dress embellished with 3-D pink and yellow glass flowers and a belted metallic, brocade skirt, garnished with shaped sequins. Whereas, Creatures of the Wind delivered flowy foiled gowns depicted dichotomy of ethereal and Goth at the same time with a help of fringed sequins, nicely punctuated with earthy bronze metallic sequins. Be it Louis Vitton’s sporty silhouettes sequin covered blouse or full-on glitz ensemble at Givenchy, the upheaval of the sequins surface was clearly visible in the Resort 2016 collections. Michael Kors showcased sequin filled dress, whereas, Sonia Rykiel, touched down the seventies with diagonal stripes of sequins running on the entire length of the dress.

With layers getting lighter, it is just the right time to celebrate Spring time dressing with a healthy serving of sequins put to action while achieving the same. Sequins in varied applications have started to grow popular amongst different buyers, the reason why many exporters are trying different methods to give their unique touch of sparkle to their collections. From sophisticated maxis to chic sundresses, metallic, beaded, pearl, transparent sequins and their looks are only getting bigger and better. Many designers like Chanel and Lanvin in their Resort 2016 collections have stepped over minimal neutrals and bold prints, to give way to seriously superb futuristic shine. Another technique to achieve a different sequin application on garments is by means of printing on sequins, be it through pigment, acrylic or digital printing. Sequins can be now knitted with summer jerseys gaining popularity amongst wearers.
While talking about shine and shimmer, Sequin has been crowned as the sign of bling since ancient years. Though exporters are moving ahead of the archetypical ways of attaining shimmer and are experimenting with fabrics, printing and heat press stones, but still sequin is not completely forgotten and new colours, types and application of sequin has kept the technique alive. Ideas like application of multi-colour sequins, dual dangling fringe creation and matte sequins which work completely opposite to sequin’s usual sparkly look, make the industry take up sequin as a new ‘must have’. Arriving with the concept of everyday sequin, sequins are being used in a much more mature and elegant ways in comparison to the playful and bright, past applications, signifying only party wear. While sequins may rule the dance floor and beading may have taken over the evening wear segment, zari and shimmery embroidery is still stunning and is getting incorporated in the collections of many designers and exporters. Interestingly, even western wedding wear is seeing the bling effect and the recently concluded ‘May Runways For Bridal Fashion’ saw use of various techniques for the glitter effect.
Be it New York or Milan Fashion Week or exporters here in India, everyone has prepped themselves for a shiny and sparkly summer and winter. With sequins available in biggest of sizes, and distinct of looks, value addition is all set to witness a new ornamentation level using the classic trim.
