Adding another successful ethical development in the booming category of sportswear textiles – there is now fabric made out of old coffee grounds. Patented as S.Cafe, this is a perfect example of turning waste, this time coffee grounds that usually end up in landfill, into a super hi-tech eco fabric. Following a process similar to that used to turn bamboo into a viscose-like material, the resultant is soft, light, flexible and breathable that can also be used to produce an outer shell that is water resistant.
Impregnated with ‘activated’ carbon, which is derived from coconut, S.Cafe UV-resistant repels water, keeping the wearer cool and binding sweat to eliminate unpleasant odours. Perfect for mid and base layers for sports like rock climbing, as well as walking, running and yoga, the best fact is that it only takes the grounds from one medium cup of coffee to make enough material for two of these T-shirts.
