The Governments of Bangladesh and China, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), have marked the successful conclusion of the China-UNDP South-South Cooperation Project at the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) office. Over the span of two years, the initiative has significantly empowered 1,425 individuals, including 1,400 women, across 32 districts, enhancing livelihoods and resilience for vulnerable communities.
Supported by China’s Ministry of Commerce (MoFCOM), the project specifically targeted women, female-headed households, unemployed garment workers, and individuals with disabilities. Key achievements of the initiative included the creation of new economic opportunities and strong networks for women entrepreneurs, which bolstered their resilience against economic shocks.
During the event, DNCC Chief Executive Officer Mir Khairul Alam emphasied the alignment of the project with Bangladesh’s development priorities. He commended the project for equipping vulnerable individuals, particularly women, with automated sewing machines and essential entrepreneurship skills, along with technology transfers and training for personal protective equipment (PPE) and garment production
Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen reaffirmed his Government’s dedication to strengthening south-south partnerships for sustainable global development. He noted that the project empowered vulnerable groups, especially women, to better navigate challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and natural disasters, while also creating employment opportunities for marginalized populations in Bangladesh.
UNDP Resident Representative Stefan Liller highlighted the project’s success in demonstrating the potential of south-south cooperation to address urban challenges, particularly for disadvantaged women.
From February 2022 to March 2024, UNDP, with support from MoFCOM under the UNDP China South-South Triangular Cooperation framework, has successfully restored livelihoods and empowered women, showcasing the transformative impact of south-south cooperation.
