
At the BGMEA office in Uttara, Dhaka, on Wednesday, Anwar Hossain, who is the Administrator of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), met with a group from the Embassy of the US in Dhaka. Also present at the meeting were representatives of the Support Committee of the BGMEA.
Key bilateral trade-related topics of discussion were market access, workers’ rights and welfare, and US tariffs on Bangladesh. Sarah Gilleski, an Agricultural Attaché at the US Department of Agriculture, and John Fay, Senior Commercial Counsellor at the US Department of Commerce, led the US delegation.
Anwar Hossain emphasised the advancements made by Bangladesh’s ready-made garment (RMG) sector during the discussion, namely in the areas of sustainability and workplace safety. He conveyed his appreciation to the United States Government for temporarily halting the implementation of tariffs on goods from Bangladesh.
Hossain also mentioned ongoing efforts with the Bangladeshi Government to strengthen bilateral trade relations and reduce the trade gap between Bangladesh and the USA. He conveyed optimism about the prospects of mutual benefits from enhanced cooperation.
