The Progressive Knit Alliance has secured a significant victory in the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) elections, earning the mandate to lead the organisation for the upcoming two years.
The elections, held on Saturday, 10th May, after nearly a decade, saw a competitive race with 38 candidates vying for 35 director posts. Of these, 35 candidates represented the Progressive Knit Alliance panel, led by Mohammad Hatem, who had also announced their election manifesto ahead of the voting.
The alliance’s manifesto outlined a series of key initiatives aimed at addressing critical industry challenges. These include resolving customs and bond-related complications, streamlining the import and export processes, establishing transparent rules for the import and use of composite units, and removing hurdles faced by bonded and non-bonded companies in raw material supply. Additionally, they pledged to take necessary steps to resolve irregularities within the Bond Commissionerate and to reduce the pressure on non-bonded companies to obtain bond licenses, along with tackling related issues.
This electoral victory is seen as a strong mandate for the Progressive Knit Alliance to implement reforms and support the growth and sustainability of the knitwear sector in Bangladesh.
