
The BGMEA University of Fashion & Technology (BUFT) has formally named Faruque Hassan as the new Chairman of the Board of Trustees. A unanimous vote during the university’s 54th Board meeting, which took place on 21st October 2024, led to the announcement.
Currently the Managing Director of Giant Group and a former President of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Hassan is anticipated to be instrumental in enhancing BUFT’s collaborations with academic institutions, research centres, and the apparel supply chain. It is expected that under his guidance, these sectors will continue to flourish and strengthen their relationships.
As a fervent supporter of sustainability in the textile and ready-to-wear sectors, Hassan has made numerous contributions to advance environmentally friendly methods. Along with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and BGMEA, he served as the co-chair of the steering committee for the Partnership for Cleaner Textile (PACT) initiative, which aims to minimise water usage in textile processing companies.
Hassan was also a member of the Steering Committee of the World Bank Group’s WRG 2030 initiative, which aimed to improve community access to and cleanliness of water. Additionally, he was one of the original members of the BUFT Board of Trustees.
In addition to his services to the textile industry, Hassan has a long history of involvement in business chambers. He has held positions as vice president of the French Chamber of Commerce and president of the Dutch Bangla Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DBCCI). Additionally, he has interacted with the Swiss and German Chambers in Bangladesh.
In addition, the Greek government named him Honorary Consul General of Greece in Bangladesh. He is a member of the Bangladesh Business Council in Dubai and the Executive Board of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC)-Bangladesh.
