The apex garment makers’ body in Bangladesh, BGMEA or the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association has recently called upon the Government to initiate immediate steps to fix the inoperative explosive detection systems or EDS at the Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) even as the garment makers’ body also requested that the number of scanners be increased in order to speed up scanning of the apparel containers.
According to media reports, the leaders of BGMEA during their recent meeting with the Civil Aviation and Tourism Secretary Md. Mokammel Hossain, made the requests even as reports suggest that garment export from the HSIA, which has witnessed a marked increase of late, is hampered as two EDS machines are out of service, while another two newly-installed machines are also not operational as they were yet to get validated from the European Union (EU).
In this meeting with the Civil Aviation and Tourism Secretary, was, reportedly, present BGMEA President Faruque Hassan, Biman Bangladesh Airlines Managing Director Dr. Abu Saleh Mostafa Kamal and BGMEA Vice-Presidents Md. Nasir Uddin, Shahidullah Azim and Khandoker Rafiqul Islam, apart from others.
