The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has urged the Chittagong Port Authority to lower port costs and enhance operational efficiency to bolster the nation’s import-export trade. This request was made during a courtesy visit by BGMEA officials, led by Administrator Md. Anwar Hossain, to Rear Admiral SM Moniruzzaman, Chairman of the Chittagong Port Authority.
Md. Anwar Hossain highlighted the critical role of Chittagong Port in facilitating the export of ready-made garments, which account for approximately 81.29 per cent of Bangladesh’s export earnings. He emphasised the need for the port authority’s full cooperation to streamline the import and export processes for the garment industry.
Hossain called for a reduction in various charges and value-added tax (VAT) related to port services, advocating for adjustments to keep pace with competing countries and maintain the industry’s competitiveness. He also stressed the importance of modernising port operations, expediting the clearance of imported LCL goods, and improving access to terminal operating systems.
In the discussion, Hossain pointed out the necessity of removing explosives and dumping materials from the port to enhance operational efficiency and improve the port’s image. He requested support in providing modern equipment and skilled manpower to assist the export-oriented garment sector.
Rear Admiral SM Moniruzzaman acknowledged the significant contributions of the garment industry to Bangladesh’s economic growth, describing it as the backbone of the country’s economy. He assured BGMEA leaders that the Chittagong Port Authority is committed to accelerating import-export activities, despite existing challenges.
Moniruzzaman pledged that efforts are underway to modernise the port and increase its capacity. He called for the cooperation of all stakeholders, including BGMEA, to facilitate the successful implementation of various infrastructural development plans aimed at enhancing the port’s capabilities.
