Bangladesh is all set to seek remedy from safeguard duty imposed by Indonesia — Indonesia has imposed safeguard duty equivalent to a maximum of Taka 956 per piece on import of 134 types of apparel products for three years even as the Indonesian Committee on Safeguards of the Trade Ministry on 23 February issued a notification of the proposal of the safeguard measures in the form of specific duty on the products irrespective of exporting countries — on global import of apparel and clothing products as Bangladesh’s export does not, reportedly, harm Indonesian local industry.
This was underlined in a recent media report which cited a Bangladesh trade official in this direction.
According to the report, the Bangladesh delegation led by the Director General of the World Trade Organisation Cell under the Commerce Ministry Md. Hafizur Rahman would, reportedly, place arguments against imposition of the duty on Bangladeshi products even as the representatives from the Textiles and Jute Ministry, Foreign Ministry, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission, Bangladesh embassy in Jakarta and the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) will also, reportedly, attend the consultation to be held virtually.
Further, as per the official concerned, the Bangladesh side would raise a number of issues which the Indonesian Safeguard Committee (KPPI) did not address while imposing the duty.
