
Bangladesh’s Cotton Development Board under the Ministry of Agriculture has developed new varieties of cotton that are more productive and have better fibre quality using nuclear techniques, in collaboration with the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Media reports maintained this adding a new cotton variety called CDB Tula 1 has already been officially released and registered in March this year even as the new cotton variety is being, reportedly, planted at 13 different locations across Bangladesh and over 1,000 farmers are receiving training on the planting procedure.
Kamrul Islam, who is the Senior Scientific Officer and Project Director at the Cotton Development Board, and his team have, reportedly, been collaborating with the IAEA and the FAO to develop new varieties of cotton.
“… we now have this new cotton variant, which can be grown in a short period of time,” reportedly, maintained Kamrul while adding that they expect this fast pace growth will increase yields and farmers’ income by 40 per cent.
