Bangladesh once again raised the issue of reinstatement of the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) facility with the USA at the much-awaited 5th round meeting of the Bangladesh-US Trade and Investment Cooperation Forum Agreement (TICFA), held in capital Dhaka on Thursday.
Making aware the US delegation (United States Trade Representative-USTR) led by Assistant USTR for South and Central Asia Christopher Wilson of progress made in the key areas of labour rights, workers’ safety and labour legislation, Bangladesh Government requested the visiting side to restore the trade facility.
“We have discussed the GSP issue under the agenda of market preferences in the TICFA meeting and the US delegation has responded positively,” observed Commerce Secretary Md. Jafar Uddin after the meeting, adding that visiting delegation was satisfied with Bangladesh’s progress in labour-related issues.
The USTR team though wanted to know some specific information on the rights issue, the Commerce Secretary further underlined.
It may be mentioned here that Bangladesh and the United States of America inked the Trade and Investment Cooperation Forum Agreement in 2013.
