Bangladesh’s connectivity with its neighbour India, which is emerging as an important apparel export destination, while also being a significant source of raw materials for the former’s burgeoning apparel sector, is all set for a facelift after Prime Ministers of both countries are expected to inaugurate the Akhaura-Agartala Cross-Border Rail Link, Khulna-Mongla Port Rail Line, and Unit 2 of the Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant.
This is as per reports, which added, the 12.24-kilometer rail connection, with 6.78 kilometers located within the borders of Bangladesh, serves as a vital link between Gangasagar Railway Station in Akhaura, Brahmanbaria, and Nischintapur Railway Station in Agartala, India, thereby establishing a crucial transport link between the northeastern region of India and Bangladesh.
This momentous project is set to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Indian counterpart, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a virtual event.
This achievement will not only enhance transportation and trade but also foster regional economic growth.
In addition to this significant rail project, two other Indian-assisted development initiatives will be launched on the same occasion. One of these notable projects involves the construction of a 65-kilometer railway connecting Khulna to the Mongla port in Bagerhat, which promises to streamline the transportation of goods to and from the port, improving logistics efficiency.
Furthermore, the second unit of the Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant located in Bagerhat’s Rampal area will be inaugurated, adding an impressive 660 MW of electricity to the national grid, thereby addressing the growing energy demands of the region.
