Police have detained seven people in connection with the recent unrest linked to Nassa Group workers in the Narsinghpur area of Ashulia.
Dhaka District Police Superintendent Md Anisuzzaman confirmed the development on Thursday evening (25 September) while attending the Gono Bishwabidyalay Central Students’ Union (Gucsu) election.
Ashulia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Abdul Hannan said the arrests were made earlier in the day from different locations in Ashulia. The detainees were later formally shown arrested in a case filed by the Industrial Police.
SP Anisuzzaman said a meeting at the ministry had decided to settle outstanding worker payments by selling off Nassa Group property. However, the workers staged demonstrations the very next day instead of waiting for the process, which resulted in vandalism and injuries to members of the police, army, and the company’s security personnel.
He claimed that only a small section was behind the violence, adding, “They are not genuine workers but outsiders who created the disturbance.”
The SP further said that the key accused, Tipu Sultan, who previously had ties with the banned Chhatra League, was spreading misinformation to provoke workers. He has been arrested and produced before court, while six others face charges of vandalism, arson, and assault on law enforcers.
On Wednesday, Nassa Group workers demonstrated in Narsinghpur demanding unpaid wages and the reopening of their factory. Police dispersed the gathering with water cannons.
